Production approval
The Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority (HFS) administers food legislation and has the authority to issue executive orders under this legislation.
HFS distinguishes between authorised and unauthorised food production. Matkovin.fo features both authorised and unauthorised food production.
Authorised Production
Commercial production (processing, preparation, invitation to tender) requires authorization or registration from the Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority.
A petition for authorisation will be sent to the Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority along with an outline for the planned production and sketches of the workplace. The petition will be considered and an inspection will be made before the production can begin.
Unauthorised Production
Food made from sheep, cattle, domestic birds, wild birds, hare, vegetables and fruit can be sold as unauthorised production, either as processed or un-processed product. The Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority does not inspect this production. Unauthorised products can be sold as wholesale, retail, at markets and in restaurants that also sell authorised products.
